Cucumber Snack

There are times that I'm in a hurry, but awww ^_^, I just couldn't refuse to give them anything as I hear them cutely wheeking to me.  I would try to give them pellets or hay, but they would only have a bite or so, and continue wheeking.  With that, I would understand that they are craving for veggies!

But there are days that I really have no time to slice and prepare their veggie meals, which are usually 3 different veggies each time.

My guinea pigs don't need to feel unsatisfied at all, as I would give them Cucumber slices for a snack!

Cucumber is the easiest one to slice in long pieces.  It's soft and won't get them choked.  There's no need to thinly slice.  This is a very important snack because despite the rush, they are still able to enjoy veggies.

Cucumber also keeps them hydrated.  It's watery, the piggies munch on them like ice lollies!  It helps them to feel comfortable when it's so humid.

I also give them Cucumber snack as reward! :)

So remember, give your guinea pig a refreshing treat, Cucumber snack!!! ;)

Hay in the Ball

I wanted my Piggies to have a new toy to play with :D  While shopping for their supplies, I had seen this Ball :) where I could put their Hay inside.  I thought this would be a very perfect toy for them, since they love munching on hay so much, and at the same time, enjoy themselves if they find the Ball amusing ;)

I only bought one for a try.  I intended to give the Ball first to Kadbury & Krunch, since among my guinea pigs, it is them who never stop eating hay day and night (unless they are sleeping lol :D ).  But when I had given it to them, surprisingly, they didn't seem interested.  I was sure they saw the hay inside, but because they have lots of hay supply (all the time!), they probably just snubbed the toy.  MM only had some pieces of hay.

I then gave it to Milky Way, since I had thought she's the one who needed toys the most.  And the moment she saw that the Ball could roll, she started popcorning and running in and out of her room so happily! :)  She stayed with it for hours.

I observed that Milky Way had been calling the attention of Krunch & Kadbury.  The way she ate the hay, she looked like she's showing off the new toy Ball to them.  And what a cute sight it was when Kadbury & Krunch came over and started eating the hay along with Milky Way!  Milky Way got pretty excited :D

"Come on!  This is fun and delicious!  Let's try this!" - Milky Way
Milky Way left first.  But when she had noticed that Kadbury & Krunch were already much into it- that they were not going to stop until all the hay in the Ball is gone, she went back and rolled the Ball away from Kadbury & Krunch, to her right!

The fun part was that it was Milky Way's idea herself to encourage Kadbury & Krunch to try the Ball, but now that Kadbury & Krunch have realized the fun way of eating the hay, she decided to move the Ball away from them! :D

Since then, Milky Way has allowed Kadbury & Krunch to play with the Ball, but sooner or later, she goes back to the ball and rolls the Ball over away from them :p

When a guinea pig doesn't want to try a new vegetable, a fruit, or a new brand of pellets, I reckon showing them that your other guinea pigs eat it would entice them.

Looks like I'm gonna need more Balls! ;)

Bathing the Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs have a babyish scent :)  if you properly take care of them - i.e. cleaning their cage, replacing their bedding, and making sure that they have a proper diet with hay, pellets, and vegetables.

They clean themselves everyday too.  But even so, they will feel cleaner when you give them a bath every 4 months like I do.

My guinea pig babies have their bath so that I can maintain their shiny and soft fur.  It could also help them feel better from the humid weather.  Guinea pigs should also take a bath if you see lice.  They are not allowed to take a bath for like a month if you've just used an anti-lice spray on them.  So before spraying that on them, give them a nice warm bath.

You should not give your guinea pig a bath every week or monthly.  Like dogs, frequent bathing can remove the natural oil of their fur, and make their skin irritated or dry. They might also get cold.

Here's how I give them a bath:

Prepare 5 towels nearby.

I get 2 plastic basins - one where my guinea pigs have their bath, and the other where the water is into.  I check the water if it's too cold.  I definitely add warm water to the tap water.  Then I use a plastic cup to serve as their dipper.

I put the basins on the floor, so as to be sure that my guinea pigs wouldn't fall.

I ask the help of my Mom and my sister Michelle to firmly hold my guinea pigs.  They could panic when they feel the water.  Milky Way, MM, Kadbury do, and it's only Krunch who feels so relaxed with the water.  It could also protect the water from not getting it into their nose.

Then I use a Shampoo for Small Animals that I got from the vet.  Only use a small amount of shampoo, just enough to massage them with it.  Never get the shampoo near their mouth, eyes, and nose.  Shampoo them as quickly as possible, and rinse it right away.

After rinsing the shampoo carefully, I put my guinea pigs on the first towel and it would get wet so fast.  I would use the second towel to dry them better.  When it's already wet, I place them on the remaining towels, then use a hairdryer on them, in the lowest temperature.  Don't put the hairdryer directly on them.  The hairdryer must be placed far from them, just enough for the air to flow and reach their fur.  If it's too hot for your skin, then surely your guinea pigs feel the same as well, so always check its temperature.

Wrap them for some minutes with the towel, and by then, they are almost completely dry.

Milky Way is the first one who has her bath, because she takes the most time when bathing, with her beautiful long red hair ;)

MM is a quiet sweet baby, so she doesn't move much during her bath, but her wheeks sound like soft cries (which she rarely makes) from a baby :)

Kadbury likes the water, and she would only move a lot when I put on the shampoo, and then makes her soft whining sound :)

Kadbury & Krunch are the most alert on meal time lol  On bath time, they still are the most watchful ;)  They sure are vigilant when Milky Way & MM have had their bath.  As they are waiting for their turn, they won't move much, unlike when they move around on meal time, and instead stay where they are and stay close with each other.

Krunch is such a model in all situations... so composed!

Surely they will have a nice sleep!!!! :D

Daydreaming

Pretty Face Krunch
Usually, guinea pigs sleep with their eyes open.

When they are so relaxed though, you catch them sleeping with their eyes half-closed, or fully-closed.

You can know that they are sleeping even when their eyes are open, not only because they are lying down, but you can see their "dreamy eyes".

Just like Krunch here in the picture.  She is relaxing and sleeping.  It's as if she's daydreaming -  singing the song "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music - for her it's definitely ... veggies! ;)

What do you reckon your Piggy is daydreaming of?

Yeah Mom?!

Do guinea pigs know their names?

Yes they do!  They are able to recognize their names.  And learn them so fast.

MM was able to know hers in a month!

"Mom, why are you calling me?" :)

We called her by her name a lot, as we purposely wanted her to know her name, during her playtime and her mealtime - the time of the day when she was the most active.  I think it helped that her name is two-syllables.

So ever since, she has never forgotten her name MM.  Each time I call her, she certainly looks back.  When she's asleep, and it's veggie time, she doesn't need to recognize the scent of fresh veggies as we just call her by name, and she gets up right away.

Milky Way is also a very fast-learner.  I couldn't believe she learned her name during her first week!  Actually, I first noticed that she would respond with a nod when I'm addressing her.  Not when I'm talking about her, such as "Milky Way is so cute!".  She would only respond when she understood that it's her I was talking with, like "Milky Way, you are so cute!  Milky Way, you are a baby!  Milky Way, I'm your Mommy!".  At first, I thought it was random.  And then I noticed the same manner of nodding, each time I talked with her.

I asked my mom to see how Milky Way would react.  We dearly call her "Little Girl".  But after my mom saw how she had reacted, she told me to only call her by her name Milky Way only until we had no doubt that she knew that's her first name, so as not to make her confused which was which.

And in the next day, I tried calling her name without saying anything else.  At first, I thought she was not responding anymore.  And soon after, she surely knew she's Milky Way.  But only when it's me who's calling her - since I'm her mom! :p

"Yeah Mom?!!!"

Not only she looks around when she hears her name.  She would actively acknowledge my call with a nod, and since her fur is long, she responds with a flick of hair!  It's like she's saying, "Yeah Mom?! Eh?".

To check if Milky Way truly knows that that's her only name.  I would call her with the other names of our pets, and she won't care with that call at all!  She won't even look back.

And since then, she's never failed to answer back with a nod and a flick of hair.  Now she responds to whoever is calling her name.  There's no time that she wouldn't respond.  It's automatic for her to nod at the sound of my call, wherever she is during playtime, or when she's in her room.  I feel like at times, she thinks I'm a distraction, but still, she nods with the sound of "Milky Way!!!" ;)

Kadbury and Krunch don't react as much as MM and Milky Way do when I call them.  But I just know that they are aware of their names.  They don't look around when they hear their names each time. But they surely respond when they are relaxing, and suddenly they hear their names.  And especially, when it's feeding time!

It's better that the guinea piggies know their names. It would be easy to call them back when you left them wandering around.  It also brings more fondness between you!

The Mom

In Australia
I love everything here.
It truly feels like home.
I pray to have my own family here someday...
and we'll take care of as many piggies as we can!!! :)

My Babies

I just love them all.  I always try to think who among them is the most beautiful.  But I just couldn't choose the one that stands out the most as each has got her own unique beauty.

The twins:
Kadbury & Krunch

Kadbury (right)
She is the eldest; and she truly acts like one.  She is the dominant between them.  In their playpen (and room), it is her who decides where area to stay, and Krunch has to follow! If she has already occupied the area to sleep at, Krunch has no choice but to stay elsewhere and wait for her turn.

But Kadbury is still a very loving elder sister to Krunch, as she is Krunch's protector.  It is her who mostly guards their room.  She's the lookout all the time.  Whenever there's a loud bang or something, she would go to Krunch right away and try to give her comfort, as Krunch would squeeze herself to Kadbury.

Every night, Kadbury would 'wash and groom' Krunch.

Krunch (left)
She is the naughtiest among the babies.  She would grab each chance she could get, just to sneak out.  She is the food barker among them; with the slightest sound of vegetables and plastics, she would wheek so loud and alert her sisters.

We fondly call her the 'media sensation' as she seems aware whenever we take her pictures.  She would surely stop and pose for the camera most of the time.  And I think she is the photogenic one at every angle!  Even when we try to record her voice, she really gives us time to record it long enough.

M&M
The most intelligent, loving, smartest one we have ever had in our family!  My whole family is so attached to her.  She is like a real baby or child to me.  I'll tell in my following posts stories about her.  She is the most confident among them.

We also call her simply MM.  My fiancĂ© said it means 'Me & Mary' ; and as for MM, it means 'My daddy & Mommy' !!!  Still, it's the dad who's the first!

She truly understands a lot of words, which makes her so empathic.

Milky Way
The new one in our family.  She is exactly 4 months old today.  She is the 'posh' with her long hair.  I'm waiting a little more time before I start grooming her hair.

She is also a very intelligent baby.  Surely, she learned her name just in her first week with me!  And since then, she has never failed to respond whenever she hears her name being called, especially when it's me calling her.

With her looks,  I get reminded of the first ever squirrel my fiancĂ© and I saw.  Her name also brings me back to some of my sweet memories.  Her fast movement is very cartoonish, in a very cute way.  She always makes my family laugh.

All of them are as sweet as chocolates.

Hi Guinea Pig Lovers!!!

I'm Mary.

I have 4 Guinea Piggy Babies:
Kadbury & Krunch (9/19/10)
M&M (10/3/10)
Milky Way (21/2/12).

I had never had any idea how lovable guinea pigs were until the day I had them. I never observed one before, so I didn't know before how cute they are.

I fell in love right away when I saw my first guinea pigs, Kadbury & Krunch. And the more I had realized how much I loved them on the way home with them. I could still remember the way Kadbury's gaze on me looked like, when she had seen me eating cinnamon gluten-free cookies. I was so surprised she jumped off the tray I put them in and landed on my chest, because earlier that day, I read that guinea pigs couldn't jump high! I gave them Timothy Hay and they started sweetly wheeking. And that's the first time I'd seen guinea pigs adorably munching hay.

When I first saw M&M, I already had this "mother's connection". My sister picked her up to see how she would react, and what I did was to kiss her right away! I only kiss pets when I'm sure that I would take them home. But I wasn't sure why I instinctively just kissed her, even I still planned on checking out other guinea pigs. It turned out that my feeling was right, and she's the only one!

I reckon that guinea pigs are one of the most loveable pets as they are like real babies when they wheek and when you're cuddling them! You could play with them as they run around and get curious with you without them ever biting or scratching you. They still "bite" only when you startle them. They are the most gentle creatures I've ever seen, but at the same time, so intelligent and so smart. They are just the best!

I'm looking forward to writing my experiences about taking care of them.

Let's spread the word so many guinea pigs would find loving homes!
